Description

During my 6 month stay in China in 2005, I stayed at my cousins house in Beijing for a few months. I had a room in the basement of his house and to my delight I discovered there was art studio in the next room. This studio is where I started to paint. My cousin had a Naxi artist friend who sometimes used this studio too. He taught me how to paint on chinese rice paper and encouraged me to explore the possibilities of chinese style painting. I visited art galleries in Beijing and really fell in love with the abstract Chinese paintings i saw there. My Naxi friend, Naro, also taught painting in the near by art college which is where he took this series of work to get scrolled, "Biao", I think is the name for this process. So I left China in April 2005 with 16 scrolls of my work. A lovely souvenir of my time in Beijing.

Materials: Chinese Ink and Acrylic paint on Chinese rice paper. Made between January and March 2005.

Woow, that's lovely. I've always wished to lay my hands on a nice authentic piece of rice paper too.. just to paint around...
chinese painting is yes, very abstract! That's what I love about it; there are so many blurry effects you can do with the ink or watercolour. I think it places alot of emphasis too on clean, elegant lines.
